Teacher, musician, Residential Director at Portland Station, career teacher Su Hodgson felt a calling to work with kids when she was still in high school. Things got started when she was a junior at Marist High School and worked in the Big Brother/Big Sister volunteer program in Eugene, OR, followed by summer camp counseling, and several college summers spent working with youth.

After growing up in Portland and Eugene, Su attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, earning a degree in education with a concentration in English. During that time she continued to work in summer camps as both a musician and a counselor, as music is Su’s lifelong love and adjunct career focus. After college graduation Su worked as an education specialist and residential counselor at The Children’s Farm Home in Corvallis, when, in 1985 she moved to Columbia, S.C. to teach and pursue graduate studies at The University of South Carolina.

While living in Columbia for 25 years Su taught 8th/9th English in grade level and advanced placement classes, in addition to the middle years International Baccalaureate program. Su spent several additional years as a homebound instructor for secondary students, teaching all subjects in home settings. While in public education Su continued to perform on percussion for stage performances and in her own bands, and also taught private music instruction on drums and guitar. Yearbook advisor, Student Intervention Team director, head coach for track and volleyball, all roles which provided direct engagements beyond the classroom. During these years Su finished 40 hours of graduate credit in literacy and counseling before returning to Oregon in 2011 to be closer to family.  Su is the mother of two daughters, Abby, 30, of Portland, and Tess, 25, of Chattanooga, Tennessee. In February of 2011, Willow Josephine was born to Tess and Casey. Willow is the apple of her Grandma Su’s eye.

Su joins Portland Station as both teacher and mentor in the role of Residential Director and Teacher in Residence. She brings over 30 years of experience working with kids and young adults in myriad capacities, and adds her wisdom, compassion, commitment, AND fine arts to Pacia Life at Portland Station.
