All Pacia Life services have and continue to be operational except online high school and college courses that require the internet. Students completing High School credits through the University of Nebraska can still complete all homework and progress without the internet. All self-efficacy adventure models including sailing, equine, scuba diving, surfing, mountain biking, Spanish classes, medical and therapeutic services came back online within 24 to 48 hours of Hurricane Maria passing. And, opportunities for personal growth through service on the island are abundant. Pacia Life young adults have often chosen to include both local and international service missions and now is a wonderful opportunity for real-life service in some of the high mountain areas of Puerto Rico.

While it has been over 80 years since a tropical storm or hurricane has caused reportable damage to Rincon, Puerto Rico, we would like to share that the buildings and properties of Pacia Puerto Rico (aka Surf House) were selected for their safety and ability to withstand damage during a storm. The buildings are all cement, have over 1,100 gallons of water storage plus access to spring water, food storage, a diesel generator that is hard-wired into the home, etc.
While Hurricane Maria did postpone some of the normal services for 48 to 72 hours, as soon as the storm passed, all other services resumed other than Internet-based educational services. While we are aware of the news reports and our hearts go out to those who have experienced hardship, the type of work that Pacia Life does in Puerto Rico is not directly tied to what others may be experiencing.
